Did you sign up with Google?

If you created the account with Sign up with Google, there is no password on it. Typing your email and any password will always fail with this exact message. Use Log in with Google instead.

The login screen says the same thing under the error: Signed up with Google? Use the Google button above.

This is the single most common cause, and it looks identical to a wrong password from the outside.

Then check these

The address. Check for typos and for a different address you might have signed up with, such as a work address rather than a personal one.

Caps lock and autofill. A password manager filling in credentials for a different site is a common cause.

Reset the password. If it really is an email and password account, type the address into the Email field, select Forgot Password?, complete the CAPTCHA, and select Yes, send it. See Log in and stay logged in.

Why the message is vague

It is deliberate. The same message is shown whether the address is registered or not, so the login form cannot be used to find out who has an account here. That is why it will not tell you which half is wrong.

An account already exists with a different sign-in method. Try signing in with Google or email instead. The address is registered under the other method. Use that one.

Too many attempts. Please try again later. This one comes from the sign-in service after repeated failures, and it clears on its own. Give it a few minutes.

Too many attempts. Account locked for 5 minutes. or Too many attempts. Try again in 240 seconds. Different mechanism, despite the similar wording. This is the login form’s own limiter, triggered by five failed attempts within a minute. Nothing is locked on your account, only the form in this tab, and reloading the page clears it.
